Prior to M33, Gates worked as a political science researcher, investigating the impacts of national policies on diaspora voting and migration within sub-Saharan Africa. During her time as a researcher, she co-authored a published paper examining the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the daily experiences of urban migrants. Additionally, she worked as an emergency medical technician on a 911 ambulance service.

Gates graduated from Williams College with a B.A. in Biology and Political Science. While at Williams, Gates was the Chair of the Berkshire Doula Project, a community organization dedicated to supporting the reproductive health needs of Berkshire area residents. Additionally, Gates taught science to local elementary students and competed on the Varsity field hockey team. In her spare time, Gates enjoys cooking, skiing, and spending time with family and friends.
